Win a Trip to Norway, Your Way!

Visit Norway is holding a competition for five people to win a 10 day trip, all expenses paid, to Norway.  To enter just submit a photo, story, blog, poem, song, etc – anything “media” – that is inspired by Norway and its values, onto the Norway. Your Way pages .  The prize is a bit of [...]

Crossing Ferries

Ferry crossings are everywhere in Norway.  It is sometimes just easier to boat around the mountain than build a  through it.  Some crossings are time-savers so you don’t have to drive in and out of fjords, and others are a link to the outside world.
The Fosen ferry route between Flakk and Rørvik is very busy [...]

The Bus from Alta to Tromsø in February

Sometimes we prefer to take the bus back home to Tromsø rather than fly.  The bus ride is about six hours but it means we get to look at the scenery, have a snooze, eat, ride on the ferries and spend some time playing with the kids.
The seasons are very dramatic in Norway and different [...]

Air to Alta

It takes about six hours to drive to Alta, more if you stop and eat, miss the car-barge or take pics.  On a straight highway it would only take about two hours to drive from Tromsø to Alta, but because Norway is built by fjords and mountains, the road winds in and out, up and [...]

Chasing Aeroplanes

It’s fun to have an airport close by.  This might sound odd as the first thing people think about is the noise, traffic and pollution.  But Tromsø airport is only built for light aircrafts – propeller planes and 747s.  No Jumbos are allowed to land here.  This is normal for the airports in Northern Norway.
Tromsø [...]

Tromvik near Tromsø

Tromvik is a cute fishing village on Kvaløya Island just off Tromsø.  There is not much there, just a few fisherman huts, reindeer and hjeller (fish racks built as high as a house for air drying cod).  It’s a nice Sunday drive to have a peek at how Norwegian fishermen live.

Tyholt Tower in Trondheim

The Tyholt Tower is the second biggest tourist attraction in Trondheim behind Nidaros Cathedral.  It is a telecommunications tower and stands 120 metres high overlooking Trondheim city.

There is a sight seeing level on the lower floor.  On the upper floor is an Egon Restaurant (the Norwegian version of a T.G.I. Fridays).  The floor revolves giving [...]

Stop or I’ll Shoot

When travelling in Norway it is important to know danger signs.  This is one of them: FARE SKYTEFELT means ’shooting range’.  These can be found scattered throughout long stretches of land along highways.  They are army practice areas.  Hang on – bullets can’t read!  How do they know to stop before the sign?  Heaven forbid [...]

Bull Horns

The Bull Horns, or Okshornan in Norwegian, is a mountain formation jutting out from the Senja Island coastline.  It is obvious that the mountains get their name from their shape as they are very sharp.  It looks like they are just one row but they are actually made up of layers and layers of rock. [...]

Royal Manor in Trondheim

Stiftsgården, the Royal Manor, is the king’s official residence in Trondheim.  Right in the heart of the city, the manor was built in the 1770s as a private home for the Privy Councillor Schøller’s widow Cecilie Christine von Schøller.  This building was specifically positioned and built to show off the family’s riches but in 1800 [...]
