Crossing Ferries

Ferry crossings are everywhere in Norway.  It is sometimes just easier to boat around the mountain than build a  through it.  Some crossings are time-savers so you don’t have to drive in and out of fjords, and others are a link to the outside world.
The Fosen ferry route between Flakk and Rørvik is very busy [...]

Last Sun on Kvaløya

This is the last week of sun before the dark season.  As you can tell I’m taking all the pictures I can.  Soon the sun will disappear for two months but even in the darkness we have a ‘bright season’ – Christmas, and not to mention the Northern Lights.  Tis the season to be jolly.

Southern Sunset: Row Boat

This cute wooden row boat has become a feature of the landscape.  It is always sitting in the same place.  I know it gets used in the fjord but I have never seen it floating on the water, only sitting on the beach.  Soon the ice will come and freeze itself onto the boat.  It [...]

Southern Sunset

We were meeting friends in the city but were unusually early.  So to pass some time we thought to drive to the south tip of the island to watch the 2:30pm sunset.  It was beautiful.  Throughout Autumn the sunsets move from the West to the South, to the East and eventually disappear.  The more the [...]

An Otterly Awesome Experience

Just when you think you have seen it all… it all comes together.

To my right was this quaint little beach.

In front was the Arctic ocean.

And to the left was an otter checking me out.  Ringvassøy, just north of Tromsø, is a secret treat.

Muskox in the City

muskoxEven though the males are called bulls and the females cows, the muskoxen are more closely related to sheep than cattle. Make no mistake, though – this is not your average cuddly ba-ba-blacksheep! A grown animal can be 2,5 m long and weigh up to 400 kgs, and their long curved horns mean business.

High on Life – Tromso Cable Car

Norwegians know how to make the most of a mountain.  From snow sports (skiing, snow boarding etc) to summer sports (glacier hikes, para-flying etc), leisure activities (sightseeing, sunbathing) to modern commodities (restaurants, tunnels).  Not a mountain is wasted.  In fact, nearly every city in Norway is surrounded by high places that give wonderful extended views [...]

Winter by the Shore

It is noon-day in the Polar Night. … The landscape seems so delicate that it could crumble into millions of pieces and then melt away.

Saturday in the City: Market Square

The Market Square is in the centre of town and has a great view of the mainland mountains, the famous Arctic Cathedral and the worlds northern-most Cabel Car. During summer you can watch extreme sport lovers paragliding off the mountains in the back ground with their colourful parachutes. In the winter time the [...]

Winter Sunset

In winter Tromsø is just a back to back of sunrises and sunsets. You can only tell which one you are looking at by checking your watch.
