Kakao – Homemade Hot Chocolate
Hot Chocolate is the perfect drink for those cold winter nights. Like all Norwegian favourites this one doesn’t have a strict recipe – just a long as you use good quailty cocoa powder your hot chocolate will turn out perfect every time. Here is Farmor’s routine for two chocolate love mugs:
Get out two mugs (nearly the same size). Take one mug and fill it about half way with water. Put the water into a small pot. Add 1 tablespoon of good cocoa powder and 1 tablespoon of sugar to the water. Whisk lightly and turn the stove top on to heat. When the water is warm (before it boils) use your mug to add in 1 and 1/2 cups of milk. Whisk and heat – do not let it boil. When warm enough, take the pot off the heat and add in a couple of drops of vanilia essence. Pour into your mugs and enjoy!
When there are a lot of people, Farmor makes the hot chocolate in a huge pot. It is put onto the table with a special soup laddle with a pouring tip so everyone can serve themselves – very similar to a punch bowl.

Today herding reindeer is synonymous with the Sami culture. It is recently thought that the Vikings were the first people to herd reindeer.
There is an opposition in everything. At the darkest time of the year, we celebrate Christmas. And at the exact opposite end, when the midnight sun is at its highest, we celebrate Midsummer.
How Norway became a country is shrouded in mystery and folklore. The most well known tale is of Harald Hårfagre who gathered the small kingdoms of the north into a unified nation in 872AD – and of course, this story is about love.
