Graphemes and Phonemes

A Little Grammatical Background
A grapheme, or character, is the smallest unit of a writing language. Alphabet symbols or letters, Chinese characters, numbers and punctuation marks are all graphemes. Single and multiple graphemes, know as digraphs and trigraphs, represent one phoneme or fundamental sound such as ‘rs’ and ‘skj’.
