Viking Sheep Are More Than Just Livestock
I’d say the best thing about having an animal farm is getting to know the personality of each animal you look after. Viking sheep are an amazing breed. They are super intelligent but very affectionate. When you build their trust they will follow you anywhere.
Sometimes I hang out with them just for company and they are very comfortable with me sitting with them. I usually get one or two who want a scratch behind the ears. I pick off twigs and leaves from their wool and they try to return the favour, nibbling at my clothes to straighten them.
Even though they can jump our fences, they don’t travel off the farm. They know where home is, they feel safe and they know we will always give them food.
Sometimes the sheep follow us around the farm while we are working. It is likely because they want some food, but I like to think it is because they enjoy our company.

I tried to find more information about Viking sheep, but I can’t seem to find anything… is there an actual name of the breed – besides Viking Sheep? Help!

In Norwegian they are called ‘gammelnorsk spælsau’. They are a specialty breed in Norway so not many normal farmers have experience with them. We have been breeding them for two years now and I must say they are the best and smartest sheep we have ever come across. Lovely, friendly and trainable.
