Politicians on Patrol

It’s not often you see the different political parties come together and agree on something. However, with the last few months’ wave of assault rapes in Oslo, all the members of the city council decided it was time to stop passing the blame back and forth and take action. Personal action.
All the political parties in Oslo have now committed to join the Night Ravens, a volunteer organisation of people patrolling the streets in major cities. At least until the end of this year, City council members will be spending their weekends as Night Ravens, aiming to create safer streets with their presence and being extra eyes and ears for the police.
The city council members are not the only ones taking to the streets. The Night Ravens organisation has experienced a surge of volunteers wanting to join in an effort to “take back their city”. After the latest statistics showed 51 reported assault rapes in Oslo so far this year, people have realised thet one can’t rely on law enforcement alone to provide safety.
The city council has also installed extra street lights in high-risk areas to make the walk home safer for women.
It also seems that the efforts of politicians and citizens has had an effect. Last weekend there were only minor acts of violence and no reported assault rapes in the capital.

Reindeer is synonymous with Sami culture and life but the Norsemen have certainly cottoned onto the goodness of reindeer cuisine. This rustic meal is perfect for cold Winter nights and packs you with energy for the next day of playing in the snow.

The further ‘out of the way’ you go the more common it is to see folk cottages standing by the side of roads, along fjords or in a thicket of trees, minding their own business.
Sounds more like a political stunt to me than trying to find an actual solution to the problem. If they really care why don’t they allow more money for the police departments, take a salary cut so more money can go to public safety or better yet get over the “equality” thing and actually let these females have a cut on taxi fare so they can arrive home more safely? Something tells me a few black suits walking around at night isn’t going to curb alot of rapes. I doubt these politicians will even go into the neighborhoods were most of these rapes take place.

I don’t see how it can be a stunt since all the different parties are involved. Local politicians do not govern the police or their resources, that is up to the State and the Department of Justice. Since the Department of Justice were taking their sweet time giving the Police more resources and manpower, the city council decided to take matter into their own hands. To me, this is a good case of “leading by example”. Also, local politicians do not make any significant income in their city council positions – most of them actually have normal jobs on the side. (The former mayor in our home town of Alta was actually a farmer – and the current vice mayor is a pub owner.).
You may think it doesn’t make a difference, but the presence of dedicated people in high-visibility jackets – not black suits – did contribute to a safer city last weekend. We’ll see what the future holds.
