Finding a Job on NAV: Tutorial

This is a screencast tutorial on how to look for jobs in Norway using NAV. NAV is a government agency that has a job search section. NAV collects from job posting websites, kommune job boards and newspaper job ads, so it is a good starting point when looking for jobs in Norway.
The screencast tutorial is maximum quality. This is so you can see the writing on the NAV website, as it is normally very small. If you have slow internet, it might be best to download the screen tutorial to watch it on your own computer. Watching it in fullscreen will allow you to see the details of jobs descriptions.
Hope this will be helpful!

I find finn.no much more helpfull than NAV…

Finn poaches jobs from other places too and in a lot of areas they don’t have half as many jobs on offer – for instance today NAV has 31 jobs in Alta and Finn has only 6. Jobbnorge is where a lot of government agencies advertise including medical and health. Looking on the internet news websites is helpful too.
Thanks Jay, for the detailed demo. It was very helpful
hey! just wondering, do you speak fluent norwegian now?

Far from it I’m afraid. We speak English at home so the kids can learn English and tal with their Australian family so I don’t get much practice in. I can understand much better than speaking. I can read and write much better too. But, one day!
Don’t you get pressured to speak it fluently? I seem to get it all the time and sometimes just wish I was matrix-ified and download it to my brain and voila! Instant Norwegian!
Also, can I ask if the classes helped? I am starting one soon and I have high hopes for it as the tv and talking to my partner isn’t cutting it enough.
Good on you though for being so positive!
Hello, L-Jay.
Now I will be brief. First to see will be a contact.
You have information / brief / to me.
Questions to you are pretty.
Many will be grateful if you help me!
But little by little. Gradually.
I use Google to translate. There may be something obscure.
My English is poor. Probably the Bulgarian, Russian, Macedonian, Serbian, Croatian, Czech, not to able to communicate.
Question is: Can not find a modest home on a farm near
Swedish border? To be cheaper than in cities? Less.!
Question: Can I register a company quickly to the self? Sole proprietor / artist /?
I have / as I wrote in the summary information / company registered to work as an artist / portraits, landscapes …. / In Sweden. I got right to work there. And I have a personal number with 10 digits. But my business is frozen. Now I am in Bulgaria. My wife is sick.
I think I’ll move to Norway with my wife.
Explore’m much information on these topics: stay / EU / company, personal assistant, and other … and others …
Can I gradually introduce you to the issues? However you there! And I’m not!
Thanks in advance!
How do you send pictures of my paintings?
Nicolas

Working as an independent artist would be extremely tough in Norway. You need a good network and you need people to buy your work. That isn’t going to happen over night – in fact, it can take years, even decades. You can live in Norway if you start a business but you need a lot of money up front before you can enter the country on a business ‘development’ visa. Being an artist with no work won’t cut it.
You should try to get a contract or a commission for work before moving to Norway. This will be tough as Norwegians don’t really care much for ‘art’. But, of course, it depends on what you do. If I was you I would go to Paris, London, New York or Amsterdam – these are the best locations for artists.

If you want to get into management you will have to speak Norwegian fluently. But if you can cook or are a chef then it is a lot easier for non-Norwegians to get kitchen positions, though being a chef is only a high school level education here and doesn’t pay very well. You might want to try international companies like shipping and oil.

In the oil industry you will find good employment for geology, even without Norwegian but it means you will be away from your family a lot. It will be hard for your wife to find employement as a teacher unless she knows fluent Norwegian.
Hello, my name is Stefan and I live in Dublin, to work as a head chef, is hard too get jobs in Norway as a chef? tank you

There are a few jobs around that even advertise in English. Norwegian fine cuisine isn’t a very high standard compared to the rest of the world, so if you are any good I think you have a better chance than most other professions. However, chef wages here are very poor. It is the same as an assistant childcare worker. It is because a chef qualification is only obtained at high school.
hi L-Jay, mi name is Lori, in the last decade I have been living and working in many places, some 7 years ago,at that time our home was Scotland, we (me and mi ex-wife) took the ferry from newcastle to bergen in a 3 day cruise , I wreally enjoy it, a bit cold…mi situation changed and I like to give a try and make a change, I have experience in the stone masonry, brick, block laying, wall floor tiling, plastering, rendering,, I am a vampire from Transylvania so I dont nowanything about permits for Norway, many thanks and all the best Lori

Norway doesn’t do ‘brick’ – or plaster and very rarely tiling. But Norway does do slate. It is typical, and by some kommunes, required to use slate on your house roof. Maybe you could find a slate company to employ you. Or there is always gravestones

Likely not – most of your patients would be the elderly and uneducated. They always need someone with their native language. But you might be able to work in something that doesn’t require you contact with patients.

Hi,
what are the chances for a B.Tech (engineering graduate) in computer science with 7 years of full time experience. I am planning to move to Norway on Skilled Jobseeker visa. Will the employers be interested in providing a sponsorship for me in case i clear interviews there?

You will have a good chance if you know Norwegian. There are a lot of Norwegian graduates that you will have to compete with. Computer Science/engineering is a like Teaching – everyone does it.

Learn Norwegian fluently or try international companies where English is the working language.
Hei L-Jay,
I just have a question and I hope you can help me with information
Thanks for all the invaluable information you posted here
Currently, I’m doing the first year of master in BI, Oslo. I really like the language (Norwegian) so I decided to spend this summer here to learn more. Actually, I did learn it through your website before I came here. Now after 6 months (with 1 course at school), I can read and write pretty well but listening and speaking are… terrible
First, I tried to apply to be an au-pair so I can live with a Norwegian family (to learn the language, of course). Since I wrote my application in Norwegian, many families contacted me. However, when they found out I could only work part-time, they… scared
I’m totally free in summer but no family wants an aupair for just 3 -4 months
Then I found out there is a program called “Working guest” which I can work and live the summer time with a family who work in agriculture industry, I think it’s really good for learning the language as well as the culture
I did contact some agencies who provide this program but they said… I’m not eligible as I’m already lived here. Tragedy
I decide that I will find the job myself as I have working permit to work full-time in summer (along with my student visa). I tried to find information on Internet but seems that no farm advertises themselves
So, (sorry for all the lengthy explanation above) my question is: Do you know any website which is kind of… association/group/network for farmers that they may advertise this kind of job? Or do you know any way that I can find this kind of job?
Just want to share with you a little bit more: I’m very realistic and I know that it’s very hard for me to find a job with my major (marketing) here (thanks to reading your blog very early before I came here
). I do not so stressful with “finding job”. Of course, it would be nice if I have a job after graduating, which make me more valuable when I come back my country
I still prepare and try my best for getting a job, but if it doesn’t come then it’s OK
Do you know what I’m afraid most? I’m afraid that during the time I live here, I would… fall in love with a Norwegian man. It’s really possible because I’m still young and free. If so, my options can’t be opened as above… and “finding job” will become… “compulsory”
There are so many kind of emotions have come to me during the last few months, but I feel like I’m in love with the country… deeper. Anyway, future is not something one can tell
Sorry for adding to many crazy thoughts to your very rational post
Thank you

You would probably have to start your own business, and only in Oslo, Bergen or Stavanger. (And you would likely not earn enough to live on – massage isn’t what Norwegians are into.
Hi L-Jay,
I have been through all your useful suggestions and posts on this site as well as on other site – mylittlenorway.com. I really find it very informative, especially for the people like us – immigrants.
I have a query L-Jay. I am an IT Engineer with 5 years of experience in Software Quality Assurance. (Software Testing) from reputed IT firm in India. In addition to this, fortunately my work domain is ‘Oil and Gas’ domain since last two years. Now I am seeking the same kind of job (IT Engineer job) here in Stavanger. I am staying in Stavanger on dependent work permit visa from last 2 months and the visa is valid till Dec. 2013.
Can you please provide me the pointers on how can I find the job in Stavanger? (I am Engllish Speaking person).

I’d say don’t limit yourself to one job type. Many immigrants are working in fields that are different from their ‘career education’. Also, don’t limit yourself to one location. Norwegians are used to moving around the country for jobs. For example, in Hammerfest they have a big natural gas plant and they have found more oil in the north so Tromsø will now be a base (I’ve heard in rumours). Norway is a small place and you don’t want to box yourself in to career type or locale. Think of any other talents you have that you might get hired for and also go for those jobs. It is a lot easier waiting for your dream job while you are already working and earning a living.
Hello Sir
Since I found your website I have learned a lot about Norway. Still I hope you could advise me or how do you see my situation. I have moved to Stavanger recently and I struggle with finding any kind of job. I registered in numerous job agencies, called couple of them, went on interviews. I have visited couple nearby warehouses to see if they need some extra help. I browse finn.no and nav.no daily applying for various positions. I want to ask two questions:
1) is there any other option of jobseeking I have overlooked?
2) is the situation going to be any better when the summer break is over and season workers will travel back home? I intend to stay, journey to Norway was meant to be a life change.
Couple words about me: MSc in chemistry without experience. PG studies in the field of internal audit. I know all this is irrelevant since I do not speak Norwegian. Thank you in advance.
Kind regards

The job market is becoming more closed because southern Europe is flooding to Norway hoping for a better life. In fact, employers always look for ways to downsize. You have to look for a jb in your feild of work – don’t only look for jobs in you area – search the whole country. Norwegians are use to moving all over the country for jobs so you should be willing to do that too.
My name is Sumeet Ramdass. I am 25 years male from India. I have done Diploma in Hospitality Management Level-5 from Waiariki Institute of Technology, Rotorua, New Zealand. I have got 2 years work experience in F & B department. I am seeking a full time job in Norway in the same industry.

First you should find out if your credentials are accepted in Norway.
Hi L-Jay and Many thanks for your useful weblog
I have some question (which may be applicable for others) and I need your help,
I have plan to visit my brother in Sweden with tourist visa for about two month,
1- Is it possible for me to apply for “Six month permission” for seeking employment as a skilled worker and in the same time try to find a job? (During my living in Sweden and applying for permission)
2- In my case! What are the requirements for applying to this six month permission? (For example, is it necessary to fly to Norway directly? or rent/have an apartment in Norway with a personal postal address? and …)
Actually I received my BSc in Electrical engineering and MSc in IT in 2006 and I have 10 years job experiences (that 7 years are in Oil industry)
3- Do I have a chance to find a suitable job during this time without any networking in Norway?
4- Because I really like to work in Norway, what is your advice for me?
____________________
from L-Jay:
1. You cannot have two applications for visas at the same time.
2. You have to apply in your home country and stay there until your application is approved.
3. Many immigrants coming to Norway looking for work will be disappointed. Because of the financial crisis Souther Europe is trying to all go to Norway at the same time. This makes employers tighten up and stop hiring.
4. Go to Norway first and see if Norway likes you.
1- What is the the meaning of “You cannot have two applications for visas at the same time”, as I said, I want to come to Sweden and then with a short journey to Norway, I apply for Six month work permission. You mean that this is not possible?
2- As I know because of huge amount of applicants in my country, considering all applications will takes a long times in Norway embassy, about 1 or 1.5 years! and I think this is a shorter way.

from L-Jay:
You can only apply for a work visa from your home country – you will not be able to apply from Sweden unless it is your country of residence. There are no shortcuts on immigration – they have all their bases covered.
