The Best Ugliest
Norway has some pretty interesting competitions, like the Ugliest City (always a tie between Drammen and Hammerfest), the Ugliest Train Station, the Ugliest Port, the Ugliest Dialect (Bergen won last year), and, of course, the Ugliest Dog.
Here is one from Tromsø: The Ugliest Building. I wonder who would want to win that title? Some of the contestants were…
And the winner… does it really matter?

I couldn’t work out which one it was – there were so many contenders in that shot! As a group, the CoOp supermarket buildings in various Hurtigruten port stops have got to win! I’ll have to search out a few of my prime shots and send you them. I take it you have been busy lambing because I’ve really missed your blog lately. Would you consider doing one about what recipes could be done with a souvenir pack of horn salt and one of perle sugar?

We do have some recipes that use horn salt – check out our lefse post or browse the Christmas section. As for perle sugar, try sprinkling it on cinnamon rolls or shortcake biscuits prior to baking.
We were just commenting that we did not see dilapidated buildings in Norway. But surrounding nature trumps whatever humans put in disrepair.
Hmm, I know Drammen traditionally has a bad reputation, but is it still doing “well” in the ugliest city competition? Gotta stick up for my adopted hometown and say that it doesn’t look too bad these days…

Recently it seems Oslo, Førde and Narvik have pushed their way up the list too. I think it’s all very subjective – but I still vote for Hammerfest…
I think it’s fair to say L-Jay is too far away from Drammen to realize what has happened the last 20 years… Drammen is a reborn city!
Oslo is now talking about looking to Drammen for inspiration. Drammen shines like never before, there’s good reason to be proud, Julia!

I’ve been to Drammen a couple of times to visit friends. The city might be ok (I like the bridge and little park) but Drammen also includes the land around which is certainly a dive, like the train station and city centre. This is not a place that you’d want to bring tourists to show the best of what Norway has to offer.
