Saturday Shopping in Downtown Alta
Nothing to the right and nothing to the left. This is a usual scene of the main shopping street in downtown Alta.
It may seem that Alta is the role model for ‘sleepy town’, but it is all-so very tricky. Shopping in Alta is done inside. There are actually two shopping centres in the above pictures (one of them is the biggest shopping centre in all of Northern Norway). Because Alta is shrouded in ice and snow for 2/3 of the year it makes sense to have indoor shops. The other ‘inside’ knowledge is that not many Alta folk would waste such a beautiful Saturday going shopping. They are probably all down in the rivers fly-fishing.

Even though the males are called bulls and the females cows, the muskoxen are more closely related to sheep than cattle. Make no mistake, though – this is not your average cuddly ba-ba-blacksheep! A grown animal can be 2,5 m long and weigh up to 400 kgs, and their long curved horns mean business.
Runes were the written language of the Vikings.
Towards the water in a beautiful pocket of leafy oak trees is the Byneset Church.
In Norway, there are still Lefse recipes around from the 1630s! This is supposedly the traditional and original Hardanger recipe used:
A popular Summer activity in Norway is kayaking. The coast of Norway is dotted with thousands of little islands making the perfect conditions for a smooth paddle.
I like Alta! I was there last summer, for the first time in 30 years. It’s clean, new, nice and comfortable in every way. But, I always miss Tromsø and it’s visual chaos. I don’t think there is any other town that will build a highrise AROUND a random wooden shack. Just because “it was there first”.
I enjoyed Stockholm for it’s classic charm, Calgary for it’s freshness and Barcelona for it’s smells. I like Copenhagen for it’s dirtyness and Singapore for… being Singapore, I guess.
I like Alta for the same reason as Calgary, it’s all neat and new. I like Tromsø for the same reason as London. It’s visual chaos and organic.
Do you follow my thinking?
