Tromvik is a cute fishing village on Kvaløya Island just off Tromsø. There is not much there, just a few fisherman huts, reindeer and hjeller (fish racks built as high as a house for air drying cod). It’s a nice Sunday drive to have a peek at how Norwegian fishermen live.
There is an opposition in everything. At the darkest time of the year, we celebrate Christmas. And at the exact opposite end, when the midnight sun is at its highest, we celebrate Midsummer.
In Norway, there are still Lefse recipes around from the 1630s! This is supposedly the traditional and original Hardanger recipe used:
At full-moon the blue light almost looks electric. Our favourite jetty really knows how to surprise us for Christmas – especially with this ‘elfs-eye-view’.

I think Autumn is my favourite season in Norway – the weather is still warm here in Tromsø, the sunsets come down over the mountains again and the blueberries are ripe for the picking.

Even though the males are called bulls and the females cows, the muskoxen are more closely related to sheep than cattle. Make no mistake, though – this is not your average cuddly ba-ba-blacksheep! A grown animal can be 2,5 m long and weigh up to 400 kgs, and their long curved horns mean business.
Towards the water in a beautiful pocket of leafy oak trees is the Byneset Church.

Thank you for this glimpse into the lives of fishermen. I love the beauty of the land and I even love the isolation and quietness. I think I’ve been craving some of that lately as I live in the 5th largest city in the US.
