Tromvik near Tromsø

Tromvik is a cute fishing village on Kvaløya Island just off Tromsø. There is not much there, just a few fisherman huts, reindeer and hjeller (fish racks built as high as a house for air drying cod). It’s a nice Sunday drive to have a peek at how Norwegian fishermen live.

Today herding reindeer is synonymous with the Sami culture. It is recently thought that the Vikings were the first people to herd reindeer.
Even though the males are called bulls and the females cows, the muskoxen are more closely related to sheep than cattle. Make no mistake, though – this is not your average cuddly ba-ba-blacksheep! A grown animal can be 2,5 m long and weigh up to 400 kgs, and their long curved horns mean business.
Many Norwegians know what they are doing when they pick wild mushrooms. This knowledge is passed down the family during mushroom hunting trips. The hard-core mushroom hunters go into the mountain wilderness for days to get the best finds.
Towards the water in a beautiful pocket of leafy oak trees is the Byneset Church.
The further ‘out of the way’ you go the more common it is to see folk cottages standing by the side of roads, along fjords or in a thicket of trees, minding their own business.
Thank you for this glimpse into the lives of fishermen. I love the beauty of the land and I even love the isolation and quietness. I think I’ve been craving some of that lately as I live in the 5th largest city in the US.
Blessings to you L-Jay,
Debbie

Norway is dotted with these fishing communities from top to bottom. They are great to photograph.
Wonderful shots L-jay! My camera is same as yours I just don’t have all the wonderful views and scenery that you have over there here in Monterey, ca!
Thanks for sharing

Yes, it is easy to take nice shots in Norway. The light here especially makes things interesting.
