Norwegian Lesson 111
Introduction
Velkommen til Norwegian Lesson 111! One of the things that should make it easier for you to listen to our lessons is that Moose speaks with a North-Norwegian dialect. (You may notice the difference to his rhythms and inflections than someone from Oslo or Stavanger.) North-Norwegians speak with a similar tone in their sentences as English. This means when you listen to it is sounds like an English sentence or paragraph (but using Norwegian words of course…lol). For me listening to North-Norwegian has made it so much easier to learn. You can read a little about the different dialects from the post Learning Norwegian.
The other thing that makes it very difficult listening to native Norwegian are those people I call ‘the Mumbles’. The Mumbles are those who… mumble. I’d say about 70% of Norwegians are mumblers – the kind of ‘under-their-breath’ talkers that speak as if everything is a side comment. Words are slurred together, pronunciation is ‘ify’ and they have their foot down on the accelerator. You might have all the confidence in the world in your Norwegian but these people will crush you on their first breath. But don’t be let down if you can’t understand a Norwegian (they are kind of used to it…lol) The best people I find to practise on is people who have had children – grandmas are especially good (although grandpas tend to be one of the Mumbles). They know how to speak ‘baby’ Norwegian. Norwegians who have contact with a lot of different people too, like nurses, teachers and government workers are very good to speak with. At my Ultrasound appointment I could understand everything the technician was saying (I was very delighted!).
In this lesson I have added in a ‘normal Norwegian paced’ sound. As you will know what is being said it would be good for you to listen to it many times so you can practise picking up information at ‘Norwegian speed’.

Grammatikk – Tid
In conversation we often talk about when we do things. Norwegian has set phrases for ‘non-specific’ times throughout the day. We have already come across ‘frokost’, ‘lunsj’ and ‘middag’, but there are also many other times during the day. Below are some of the other times that we have introduced so far:

Grammatikk – Modalverb
Model verbs can be used alone especially in expressions but are also used with verbs in Norwegian:
skal – vil – må – bør – kan
Like verbs in basic statement sentences they are positioned second, though before the verb. The modalverb and verb joins together as one piece of information.
Jeg skal gå til skolen i dag.
Modalverb can also be used as spørreord.
Skal jeg gå til skolen i dag?
Notice how the verb is in third position? (In basic verb-questions the verb should be in first position.) However, remember above we said that when using a modalverb it joins with the verb. So the modalverb and verb act as one piece of information. Therefore, in the above verb-question the ‘verb information’ actually starts in the first position (just like in verb-questions). The pronoun/noun, as always in basic sentences, must follow after the verb – here it still does because it is following after the ‘first verb information’.
You may also notice that the verb has no ‘r’ at the end. This is because when a modalverb is being used beforehand the verb is then written/said in its infinitiv form (eg: å ‘gå’). This is a general rule for all verbs that have a modalverb before it in basic sentences.

Grammatikk – Modalverb med Ikke
When writing a negative sentence with mobalverb the ‘ikke’ is placed after the modalverb in basic sentences.
Du må ikke skrive med penn.
You must not write with pen.
The sentences become very similar to English structured sentences.

I’ve been slowly learning Norwegian the past year. This site is an excellent resource!!! I first started with a book called Teach Yourself Norwegian (see link below). Great for the basics, my only complaint was, they talked too fast on the CD for when you’re only beginning.
