Pentecostal Pains
Being so close to nature, Norwegians have a very casual relationship with the weather. Here in the north we jokingly say that «we don’t call in the kids until she [the wind] starts stripping the turf off the rooftops». To a Norwegian there is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing. We know that even though sunshine makes us warm and happy, we need to get pummeled with storms and rain every now and then to clean and regenerate nature.
Having bad weather on certain dates of the year is considered a good omen. This weekend is Pentecost Sunday, and today we got hit full force with the «Pentecostal Pains». Blasts of wind, cold rain and even snow has taken over from the lovely hot weather we enjoyed a week ago. Farmor says this is the way it’s supposed to be – the Pentecostal Pains give us a warm summer. Stranglely, this weather prediction always seems to come true even though Sunday of Pentecost is never on a constant date.
Anyway, rain or no rain – we have another long weekend! Even though Norwegians don’t always pride themselves on being religious, they sure love celebrating the religious holidays…

I never heard of Pentecostal Pains before. I’m amazed at the changes in weather your experience. I love learning so many things from you and L-Jay about Norwegians. My husband has been fascinated too.
Hello Moose and L-Jay,
how nice to have discovered your blog! I found it last night and I can’t stop reading your posts. What makes me so happy about it is that I can learn things about norwegian life written with love and interest from people who actually want to communicate their experiences. You write beautifully and you use the camera in an enjoyable way. Bravo!
For some strange reason I started learning norsk two years ago. I had a really hard time with finding learning material on the Internet. So now I find your vivid posts plus the lessons! I even started a blog in norwegian although I am not a frequent blogger. And a final thing. Do you know that there is absolutely no podcast on learning norsk on the Net? Norwegians seem to want to keep their language and culture in secret but we won’t let them.
So, keep on with your nice, nice blog and consider adding a podcast in simple norsk. It would be fantastic.
Hilsen
Giorgos

Tusen takk!
Yes, I think it would be a great idea to make a series of podcasts for everyone. We will have to research a little about it though – I have never myself used podcast to learn Norwegian (as I’m a visual learner) but it sure seems that a lot of people are listening learners. I thought that me being a beginner speaker (without dialect) would make it hard for everyone but I remember in my lessons at Norskkurset that listening to beginner bokmål helped me a lot more to understand.
Thanks for the encouragement – we will definitely look into it
.
Cheers
