Northern Lights up in Smoke
The Nordlys (Northern Lights) were wearing their best tonight. Although, they looked so good they were ’smokin’ – straight up into the night’s sky. Usually they laze over us like a rippling waterbed.
Moose started calling it’s name ‘Nordlys, Nooordlyyys…’ I laughed at him ‘what are you doing?’ ‘If you call its name it will start dancing in the sky. Watch… Nordlys, Nooordlyysss…’ And sure enough the Northern Lights started dancing in and out, round and round before fading away into the night.
This was Lilu’s first time to see such a bright display of Northern Lights – she was all dressed up for dinner and a show.

There is an opposition in everything. At the darkest time of the year, we celebrate Christmas. And at the exact opposite end, when the midnight sun is at its highest, we celebrate Midsummer.
The sun never goes down during this season but the mountains to the East are so high that the sun still has to raise above them in the morning hours and an artificial dawn-effect wakes the city.
Many English words actually come from old Norse language – brought by Vikings to England in medieval times. Here are some words you have probably uttered without realising you are speaking Norwegian!
How Norway became a country is shrouded in mystery and folklore. The most well known tale is of Harald Hårfagre who gathered the small kingdoms of the north into a unified nation in 872AD – and of course, this story is about love.
Such an amazing site. I can only hope that I will be fortunate enough to witness the Northern Lights when I travel to Northern Norway. I can’t wait.
Thanks for a great blog, it is beautiful to read.

Well, the season has got off to a very good start. I’m sure the heavens won’t be able to resist showing off this winter.
Thanks for the comment.
Lilu is adorable! And what is she eating? I’m so glad to put a face to her. And as always, you have the best photos. I love to learn new things about your new homeland.

Lilu is eating a bolle bun. It’s like a hot cross bun without the hot cross…lol. Boller buns are as popular as bread here and are often eaten with cheese and salami.
Lilu is so animated. She was so funny watching her first parade and eating her first strawberry.
Just as we were going out tonight the snow stopped and the clouds cleared. By fluke we had our camera with us
I lived in Norway for 18 years and never tired of the northern lights. Every time I saw them they took my breath away just as much as the first time.
Beautiful photo. Oh, how I long to be back in Norway.

Hi Sharon
I really like the topic of your blog Finding Simplicity – Leaving mass consumerism and debt behind in order to find a more simple, frugal and eco friendly lifestyle. You know, I feel like I did just that when I left Australia and moved to Norway. Although, it has taken me some time to get use to it (it felt like jumping into a cold shower at first…lol). I now value and enjoy living ‘the simple life’
On the other side: Sometimes I do miss the convenience of ASDA – nearly everything in Norway has to be made from scratch…lol. I lived in London for a while and I miss the bagels, the Indian food and real Italian sorbet. Num, num!
“Nordlys, NoooordLyyys,” I believe it was Geir that taught me to “call” the Northern lights.
